A Message from Mrs Campbell
Firstly, thank you for all of your organisation around last week. With Thursday being the Mega Strike and Friday our full Cluster Teachers-Only Day, we know that for some, a five-day weekend is great, while for others it's a real juggle. Thank you.
We weathered the storm at school with only one tree fatality, and thank you to Mr Baillie for his work on both Thursday and Friday last week to keep our Kura safe and secure.
It’s that time of the year when we see some changes looming.
Next week, our Year 5 and 6 students are off to Makahika Camp for 4 days. Please ensure you are keeping up with the communication here and are checking the list of items requested for camp. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you need any early support with gear.

We will be farewelling Kris Sturmer at the end of the year. Kris is off to teach at the Kura she attended as a child, St Michael’s in Lower Hutt. I thank her for the incredible care and passion she has for her learners and wish her all the best.
Grace McRobie has decided to make 2026 the start of her travelling adventure, so we thank her for her energy and wish her well.
Paula Aslett has been working as a Teacher's Aide at Upper Hutt since 2022, supporting many children throughout this time. Her patience and dedication will be missed. Paula has decided to take some time and enjoy her retirement. Thank you so much, Paula, and enjoy your next adventures.
Georgia Lloyd will be taking up a teaching job after so many years of contributing to Upper Hutt School. Georgia was a student here, has done a lot of her in class training to be a teacher and a skilled and invaluable Teacher Aid. You have also had a lot to do with Georgia through her role as Sports Coordinator. We wish you all the best in your teaching career and know that you will be incredible.

Health New Zealand is alerting schools to an escalating risk of measles as it responds to a measles outbreak following confirmation of 13 new cases of measles since 20 October.
This escalating risk is a concern, especially for education settings where measles can spread rapidly. In New Zealand, our measles immunisation rates are too low to prevent outbreaks from happening when measles is circulating in our communities. Our low immunisation rates contribute to this lack of community protection.
Measles is highly contagious and serious – about one in three people may need hospital care. It spreads when an infected person breathes, coughs or sneezes.
-
Measles is circulating and is very contagious. There is now measles in Northland, Auckland, Manawatu, Nelson and Wellington, and we expect further cases across New Zealand.
-
Watch out for symptoms – fever, cough, runny nose, sore eyes, and a blotchy rash:
-
Anyone with measles symptoms must stay at home and should seek urgent advice by ringing their doctor or Healthline on 0800 611 116.
-
Anyone who is closely exposed to a measles case must stay at home. Heath New Zealand will provide individuals with advice on a case-by-case basis (including when they can leave quarantine at home).
-
Health New Zealand is actively working with the schools that currently have measles cases.
-
People are considered immune to measles after having two doses of a measles vaccine from 12 months or older, or if you have had measles before. For more information on measles immunity visit:
-
Encourage families and whānau to check their own and their child/childrens’ immunisation status through My Health Record:
-
Anyone born between 1969 and 2004 may have only received one vaccine dose and might not be fully protected. It’s safe to get extra doses. A free vaccine can be booked online or via the Vaccination Helpline on 0800 28 29 26.

In term two of this year, the ERO (Education Review Office) team visited us to go through their review process. It was lovely to show off our Kura. They gave us great feedback and acknowledged that the report will follow the formalised structure. They identified the strengths of our Kura and our Key Priorities in this current educational climate.

Learners express a strong sense of belonging and pride in their school. The school values, positive relationships, and school culture are highly valued by students. They benefit from high expectations for teaching and learning, and teachers know their students well.
-
Leaders work collaboratively and make decisions that are driven by a shared vision and an ongoing commitment to meet the needs of all learners. Coherent and aligned systems and processes support ongoing improvement and promote successful outcomes for students.
-
Structured literacy approaches are well embedded across the school; implementing a structured mathematics programme that aligns with best practice in 2025 is a priority.
-
Learners experience a well-considered school curriculum that is designed to reflect the community and its aspirations, including the authentic integration of te Reo Māori and te Ao Māori. Meaningful learning opportunities and experiences support student needs and interests.
-
Staff professional development is targeted, planned and strategically implemented for ongoing improvement of teaching and learning and to build leadership capacity across the school.
-
Leaders and teachers are increasingly using a wide range of information and feedback, along with the school’s internal evaluation process, to inform decision making for school improvement.
-
Embed quality curriculum delivery aligned with the changes to the New Zealand Curriculum with a focused high quality teaching approach.
-
Strengthen opportunities for students to take ownership of their learning by setting goals together with teachers and parents at all year levels.
-
Refine assessment systems and processes to align to the revised curriculums and monitor the impact on learner progress and achievement outcomes.
-
Implement the attendance plan to increase the rates of regular attendance.

Sharing Our Learning
Over the last year, we have gathered ideas about what you would like to see of your children’s learning. With our change to Edge and the Edge app, we are now ready to begin doing this online.
In the next week, Kākano families will see their first posts of children’s work. These will show what the learning is about, with a sample of current work.
This can be accessed through the Edge app newsfeed. The newsfeed is being used to share notices and events already, and will be our main avenue for sharing on the app.
Rākau Hub will be sharing their first posts after camp.
If you need assistance signing up to Edge, you can get a paper copy of the instructions from the office alternatively you can read the instructions here.
